Pastor Stephens is a humble servant leader with an intense love for God and God’s people. It is the sincere desire of both Pastor Stephens and his wife to ensure that each member of Christian Unity Baptist Church has a personal relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ and is afforded the opportunity to develop to their fullest potential while being engaged in the work of the Church. Pastor Stephens is very passionate for the exposition of the Word of God with practical applications for all walks of life.
Pastor Stephens has been married to Cheryll H. D. Bowers-Stephens, MD, MBA for over 33 years. They have been blessed with three sons, and a daughter-in-law; Kevin U. Stephens, Jr., MD, MBA, a Chief Resident at Georgetown University Providence Hospital Family Residency Program, his wife Vanessa Athis Stephens, MPH, a law student at Howard University Law School, Phillip C. Stephens, a medical student at Morehouse Medical School and Jacob M. K. Stephens, a freshman at Berklee School of Music.
A native of Gonzales, Louisiana, Pastor Stephens is the second of three children born to Pastor Ulysse Stephens and First lady, Mrs. Annie Mae Stephens. Pastor Stephens was baptized at an early age by his grandfather and Pastor, the late Reverend Morris Stephens, Jr. He was licensed to preach on December 12, 1999 and ordained for the work of the Gospel Ministry on December 19, 1999 by the Faith in Action Evangelistic Team under the leadership of the late Reverend Dr. Marshall Truhill. Pastor Stephens earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Southern University in Baton Rouge, a Doctor of Medicine from Louisiana State Medical School in New Orleans and a Juris Doctor from Loyola University Law School in New Orleans. Pastor Stephens is Board Certified in Obstetric and Gynecology and in Quality Assurance and Utilization Review. Additionally, he is a member of the Bar in Louisiana. He attended the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in New Orleans, completing the basic biblical studies while working towards a Masters in Christian Education. Pastor Stephens’ wife, Cheryll H. D. Bowers-Stephens earned a Doctor of Medicine from Louisiana State Medical School in New Orleans and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of New Orleans. She is Board Certified in Adult, Adolescent and Child Psychiatry. She is currently working as a Senior Healthcare Executive.
Dr. Stephens served as the Director of the New Orleans Health Department for eight years. Some of his accomplishments during this time would include working with Senator Diana Bajoie to write and pass the enabling legislation to create the Orleans Parish Hospital Service District A&B which aided in the establishment of the New Orleans East Hospital District. After Dr. Cheryll Bowers-Stephens working with Attorney John B. Krental originated and developed the concept, Dr. Stephens worked with Senator Diana Bajoie to complete and pass the legislation to create the Metropolitan Human Service District. Additionally, he worked with Secretary of Health and Human Services, Mike Levitt, to procure a 100 million dollar grant for primary care in the Greater New Orleans Area after Hurricane Katrina. He has delivered over 7,000 babies in his obstetrical practice. Pastor Stephens has done missionary work in Kampala, Uganda helping to build a hospital for HIV/AIDS patients. He has worked in Zimbabwe to prevent maternal to fetal transmission of HIV/AIDS. He has given many lectures and sermons across the globe and is committed to community education about religious, medical and legal issues. He has published many articles and collaborated with many local, national and international media outlets such as CNN, BBC, Oprah’s Winfrey, Dr. Phil, and a monthly health show on the local CBS affiliate, WWLTV. Pastor Stephens’s has been a tremendous support as a consultant to many local, state and federal agencies and organizations throughout the years.
Pastor Stephens joined Christian Unity Baptist Church approximately 15 years ago initially serving as a musician and subsequently serving as the Executive Minister under Reverend Dr. Dwight Webster. In September of 2017, Dr. Webster issued his letter of retirement from the position as the Senior Pastor of Christian Unity Baptist Church. He has subsequently yielded to a Macedonian call from Beth Eden Baptist Church in Oakland California. On September 24, 2017, the congregation of Christian Unity Baptist Church called Reverend Dr. Stephens as its second Senior Pastor. He and his wife have responded with diligence and devotedness to this calling.
